Who We Are

Frequent Questions

  • What does Habitat for Humanity do?

Habitat for Humanity builds simple, affordable homes with and for families, couples and individuals in need of housing.

  • Are Habitat houses free?

No. In addition to the hundreds of hours of sweat equity that homeowners put into the building of their homes, they purchase their homes through an affordable mortgage provided by Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County.

  • How are homeowners selected?

Families, couples or individuals in need of decent shelter apply at our office during open enrollment application period. Open enrollment is offered periodically throughout the year. Continue to check our website for announced dates. The Homeowner Selection Committee assesses each applicant’s level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to repay an affordable mortgage loan. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing who receives a Habitat home.

  • If I were to donate funds, how is my money used?

Administrative costs are covered by the Habitat ReStore revenue so that cash donations can be used to build homes. All contributions are used where most needed: construction materials, building permits, subcontractor fees or other construction expenses.

  • Habitat is funded entirely by donations and staffed largely with volunteers. We are always in need of individuals willing to pitch in to help a neighbor in need. Visit our "Ways to Help" section to find out ways to donate or volunteer.

  • Can I volunteer even if I can’t build?

Yes. Habitat needs volunteers to work on many tasks, including working on special events, mentoring families, fundraising, preparing mailings, and providing lunches at the construction site. Call our office for more information.
